It is not unusual, both in my personal and professional life, to have someone ask for a resource referral. As an instructor, I had a clipboard attached to my bookcase for students to “sign out” books they were borrowing. Most of them came back. At times, when one didn’t find its way back, particularly if it was one I treasured, I debated closing down the lending library. Every time I considered this, I concluded that the joy it brought me to give someone exactly what they needed, when they came to me for assistance, was worth considerably more than the cost of a few unreturned items.

While in a position as a Bystander Empowerment Programs Coordinator, creating programs about warning signs of sexual violence and intimate partner abuse, I realized most people who came to me were looking for the same books. Therefore, I started buying them in bulk, so I would not be caught unprepared or empty-handed.
